Biography

Born in 1960 in London, Shaun first took up the guitar at the age of eleven. Although his progress was rapid during his secondary school years, it wasn’t until his mid-thirties – following redundancy from his career in financial services – that he made the decision to be a career musician.

Formal study followed in both the guitar and in music generally (with seemingly no end of exams!) as of course did the ‘school of life’ for any musician – The Road!

Shaun featured in covers bands Silhouette and One Way Street, followed in 1997 by Country-Rock outfit Shameless from East Kent, a band which would make an impact on both the British Country music scene and the function circuit. As well as successful Summer tours in Southern Italy in ’98 and ’99, the band recorded two Country Music albums - Shameless and Any Man Of Mine before parting in 2001 following singers Martin and Michelle Davey’s emigration.

Also in 1997, Shaun joined forces with like-minded picker Brian Carter and, a year later, Sally Ironmonger – forming a trio which would satisfy Shaun’s appetite for playing fingerstyle acoustic guitar, his real love. The trio still performs regularly – often adding Shameless ‘old boys’ Mitch Mitchell and Brian Barnett on Drums and Bass to make up a five-piece. As a trio they have recorded two albums: Built For Comfort (1999) and Graveyards and Other Comic Tales (2005/6).

The demise of Shameless left a massive hole in Shaun’s diary which was filled by the formation of The Ray Peters Band late in 2000 – a ‘scratch’ band set up by Pedal Steel supremo Tony Ryan from Ipswich and singer Ray Peters from Rochester. A successful and busy act on the British Country circuit, the band recorded two CDs - Burn ‘em up  (2002) and Choices (2004) before coming off the road in 2005.

Shaun has since been able to take a more ‘freelance’ role with his various performing projects and devote more resources to both his teaching duties at three Medway secondary schools and his position as local representative for Trinity Guildhall, the Music Examinations Board.

Renowned for his excellent ear, his versatility, his sensitivity on the nylon-strung guitar and his ability to arrange, notate and transcribe.

Shaun remains in demand for session work, ‘depping’, weddings and concerts.
